As the title suggests, I need help with my settings listening to the Capital Region Radio System involving Hanover County. I live in Midlothian, VA these days and I have a Uniden BCD 996P2, Uniden SDS100 and SDS200. I can't hear radio traffic at all for the Hanover County system on ANY of the scanners. I'm convinced I'm doing something wrong. I can hear radio traffic for Chesterfield County where I live and some for Henrico.

I live in a two story house and do most of my scanner listening either on the 2nd Floor of the house or in my car with my SDS200.

Let me know what you need (hp file, pictures, etc).

Hey Andrew. I’m not too familiar with the geography of the system, but which simulcast site are you monitoring? I’m thinking if you’re only listening to Chesterfield’s control channel, it may not carry Hanover’s talkgroups, since Henrico and Richmond is in between.

But without knowing how the system is set up, that’s only my best guess. Maybe set up Favorites Lists that contains only the other sites and see if you hear anything different.

If you are in Midlothian, you are too far south to pick up the Hanover system. Richmond / Henrico sites will only carry Hanover traffic when a Hanover unit is operating within the Richmond / Henrico footprint (such as a Hanover EMS unit making a run to St. Mary's) to preserve RF channel resources.

If you can hear a control channel on the Hanover system, I suggest you get a directional antenna and dedicate a scanner to the system.

Ok, that’s what I was afraid of. I’ll just wait until they go live with the chesterfield and Richmond sites for the Richmond capital region later next year then. For right now, I’m grateful to whoever has the Hanover Fire/ems feed up.

Hanover subscriber units are not currently programmed to roam onto external sites. The Capital Region Radio System has not yet reached final system acceptance, and full roaming capabilities will likely not be implemented until that stage is complete. As of now, all Hanover traffic is carried exclusively on Site 1.001.

That said, Hanover’s site offers remarkably strong coverage across the region—it's genuinely impressive—so I’m surprised to hear you're experiencing reception issues. I’d recommend evaluating and potentially upgrading your antenna setup to improve signal quality.

No. Testing has been ongoing since 2023.
